Pregnancy Testing

Urine vs Blood Pregnancy Tests: What's the Difference?

Finding out if you're pregnant can feel overwhelming. Here’s a quick breakdown of the two most common pregnancy tests, so you know what to expect.

Urine Pregnancy Test

  • Uses a urine sample

  • Shows results as positive or negative

  • Can be taken around 5 weeks after the first day of your last period

  • 97% accurate

  • At-home option or taken at a medical facility

IMPORTANT:  If you get a negative result but still think you’re pregnant, wait a few days and test again. hCG levels double every 48 hours, so an early test might not detect it yet.

Blood Pregnancy Test

  • Requires a blood draw

  • More expensive & needs a doctor visit

Results

  • Qualitative: Positive or negative

  • Quantitative: Measures hormone levels to determine pregnancy progression

  • Can be taken around 5 weeks after your last period

How Do Pregnancy Tests Work?

Pregnancy tests detect hCG (human Chorionic Gonadotropin), a hormone produced by the placenta when you’re pregnant.
  • Urine tests detect hCG 12-15 days after ovulation (about 10-14 days after fertilization).
  • The longer you wait, the more accurate the test.
  • For the most accurate results, have a medical professional administer and interpret the test.

Negative Test?

Here's What it Could Mean:

  • You might not be as far along as you think.
  • Your body may not be producing enough hCG yet.
  • If you still think you’re pregnant, take another test in a few days.
  • Our medical staff can help interpret your results and discuss next steps.

Positive Test?

Here's What's Next:

  •  STD/STI Testing – If you’re sexually active, you may be at risk for STDs/STIs. Untreated infections can cause serious health issues. We can refer you for additional testing if needed.
  • Pregnancy Options – We provide unbiased info on abortion, adoption, and parenting, so you can make an informed decision.
  • Free Ultrasound – If your test is positive, we offer a no-cost ultrasound to confirm pregnancy and check development.
