What Are My Abortion Options?

There are two main types of abortion: medication abortion (also known as “the abortion pill”) and surgical abortion. The methods available to you depend on how far along you are in your pregnancy, as well as certain health factors.

Medication Abortion (Up to 10 Weeks)

This involves two pills taken within a specific time frame:
  • The first pill, mifepristone, stops the pregnancy from growing.
  • The second pill, misoprostol, causes the uterus to contract and expel the pregnancy.
Most women take the second pill at home and experience cramping, bleeding, and the passing of tissue. Some describe it as similar to a miscarriage, but the physical and emotional experiences vary.
Possible risks include:
  • Incomplete abortion (which may require a follow-up procedure)
  • Heavy bleeding or infection
  • Ongoing pregnancy if the process is unsuccessful
Important: It’s crucial to confirm how far along you are before taking these pills. Taking them too late in pregnancy can lead to complications.

Surgical Abortion (After 10 Weeks)

Surgical abortion is performed in a clinic or medical setting. The type of procedure depends on gestational age:
  • Aspiration abortion (typically up to 13 weeks) uses suction to remove the pregnancy.
  • Dilation & Evacuation (D&E) (after 13 weeks) involves dilating the cervix and using surgical tools along with suction.
What to expect: These are outpatient procedures that may require sedation or anesthesia. Recovery time varies by individual.
Risks may include:
  • Infection
  • Damage to the uterus
  • Heavy bleeding
  • Potential impact on future pregnancies (in rare cases)
Schedule an ultrasound to learn how far along you are and talk with someone about your options.
